The innate immune system of mosquito disease vectors is capable of eliminating a large proportion of ingested pathogens and we have in recent years learned how to render these anti-pathogen immune responses faster, stronger and more promising for the development of pathogen resistant mosquitoes. Tripartite interactions between the mosquito, its natural microbial flora and the pathogen have also been discovered as important determinants of vector competence that could be used to modulate disease transmission. Advances in these molecular, genetic and microbiological approaches will be discussed.
